Pivoting During a Pandemic

To say that the future is uncertain for nonprofits is an understatement. COVID-19 has upended our society as we know it and no one knows how it will affect our lives and lifestyles this fall and next year. How do you stay relevant when you’re an organization that focuses on hosting sporting events and providing youth and community sports and fitness programs?

San Antonio Sports recognizes the importance of having access to fitness and what it means to our health. We pivoted in real time and transitioned our existing programming. This initiative–Stay Active. Stay Healthy–encompasses a virtual Fit Family Challenge, an Alpha Warrior 12-week progressive fitness challenge, links and videos for kids to help them stay active under the i play! brand, and links to free online fitness content. To date, our  Fit Family Challenge Home Edition presented by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas, has 1,700 engagements and 300 registered; the Alpha Warrior 12-week fitness challenge has more than 200 registered; and our web site has had more than 12,000 visits.

We’re grateful to our key supporters for helping us get the word out, including Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas, Sinclair Broadcasting, The PM Group, San Antonio Express-News, Ancira and Spectrum Reach. We also appreciate the support of our i play! afterschool coaches and Fit Family Challenge Zumba instructors for helping provide content. And I would be remiss if I didn’t recognize the San Antonio Sports staff who put countless hours into making the Stay Active, Stay Healthy initiative happen…all while working from home!

It is our sincerest hope that we will be able to host rescheduled events this fall (see story below). Please know that we will do everything in our power to keep our participants, volunteers and staff healthy and safe as we plan and execute events and programming. Thank you for continued support of our nonprofit organization.
