Volunteer Spotlight: Diane Hartung

We’re so grateful to volunteers like Diane Hartung (right in photo) who help us because they want to give back to the community. Diane is a fixture at many San Antonio Sports events, volunteering at the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame Tribute every year, coordinating Frisbee toss at the San Antonio Sports Corporate Cup, serving as a driver and usher at the 2018 NCAA Men’s Final Four, and selling concessions at the recent AAU Diving National Championships. “I enjoy meeting new people and ensuring they are having a great experience at the event,” Diane explains. “Plus I love sports and believe it is important to instill a passion for health and fitness in future generations.”

She learned about opportunities with San Antonio Sports from another long-time key volunteer, Deirdre Murphy, who knew that Diane enjoyed sports and working with people.

Diane’s favorite event is the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame Tribute where she has served as an escort several times. “I’ve had the privilege to meet some incredible people who also happen to be amazing athletes. What always stands out is their humility. Every inductee is truly honored by this acknowledgment, however, they don’t see themselves as any more important than the other guests in attendance.” Her most memorable volunteer experience has been at the gala. “Shaquille O’Neal kissed me on the top of my head and referred to me as his ‘go to’ girl.” Diane was also Annie Chandler Grevers escort. “Her family was so welcoming and included me as part of the family…they were so sweet.”

Diane says she’s enjoyed volunteering with San Antonio Sports throughout the years and is passing along her passion for giving back to younger generations. “It’s provided a great opportunity for me to teach the importance of volunteering to my niece and nephews.”
