It was a beautiful day when 1,400 students in San Antonio Sports’ i play! afterschool program came to show off their newly developed soccer skills at a special tournament. After a long day of play, Briscoe Elementary came out on top, earning the Red McCombs Cup, named after the i play! afterschool supporter. Pershing Elementary came in second and Fox Run Elementary was third. Students representing 58 elementary schools in five school districts participated. Thanks to the Harvey Najim Family Foundation, each participant has received an i play t-shirt, shorts and socks, and received shoes and a backpack at the tournament. Congratulations to all the teams for their sportsmanship and giving it their best! To see pictures from the day, click here.
i play! afterschool is San Antonio Sports’ innovative afterschool program providing children in third through fifth grades in underserved schools skill-based instruction in five sports while building confidence and self-esteem, and teaching the importance of healthy habits, self-discipline, social skills, teamwork and sportsmanship. During the 2019-20 school year,1,400 kids in five school districts have an opportunity to succeed through sports. They’ll receive skill-based instruction in soccer, track, volleyball, basketball and tennis, and each five-week sport unit culminates in a fun tournament where kids can demonstrate their new skills and parents, family and friends can cheer them on. This year the program expanded into 10 new schools in three new school districts.
