All for One and One for All: A Message from Russ

There is no corner of life that hasn’t been touched or altered by the pandemic. And perhaps to no entity greater than schools. The Coronavirus has altered education as we know it. San Antonio Sports pivoted to transform our i play! afterschool written curriculum into high energy instructional videos for our coaches, parents and students to use now and for years to come. As we were thinking about creating these resources, we thought about our school district partners and asked if there was a need for virtual physical education and basic sport training, and whether they could use these videos. The answer was yes. So we set out to build a first-class library of local content that will provide more than 75 instructional video segments in four sports.
Our 53 i play! afterschool campuses will be using the videos, as well as any Bexar County school district who requests it–at no charge. To date, Northside ISD, North East ISD, San Antonio ISD, Southwest ISD and South San Antonio ISD have and we expect more will join. Once again, we will be bridging the gap between those who can readily get instruction and those who can’t, ensuring that children in our community can experience the power of sport.
Professional athletes are helping with the videos by providing instruction and demonstrations. Former MLS midfielder Mike Lahoud, USA Track & Field athlete Kendra Chambers, and former WNBA San Antonio Stars All-Star forward Sophia Malcom-Young are each providing their expertise in soccer, track and basketball. Volleyball and a Jr. Alpha Warrior series (exercise instruction) will be filmed later this fall.
We are grateful to The San Antonio Orthopaedic Group, The Najim Charitable Foundation, The Greehey Family Foundation, H-E-B Tournament of Champions, Red McCombs Automotive and Valero for their support of this meaningful program. We welcome your donations to support this great public resource.
