Kicking into a New School Year

A MESSAGE FROM RUSS:

This past weekend, the power of sport was on display as almost 1,000 kids in San Antonio Sports’ i play! afterschool program took to the pitch at Classics Elite for the Red McCombs Soccer Tournament.  After serving fewer schools last year due to the pandemic, I’m happy to report the program has bounced back and we were thrilled to see teams from 47 schools show off their soccer skills and have their family and friends cheer them on.

This program provides so much more than skill-based instruction in soccer, basketball, volleyball and tennis. It helps build confidence and self-esteem and teaches self-discipline, social skills, teamwork and sportsmanship. New this year, a mental health component is being integrated, with Communities in School training our coaches in mental health awareness. Through a partnership with CHEF (Culinary Health Education Program), we are offering age-appropriate hands-on nutrition lessons. Both initiatives will expand next school year.

Congratulations to Hopkins Elementary (Judson ISD) who won the McCombs Cup after a day of play, defeating Graebner Elementary (San Antonio ISD). Third went to Bellaire Elementary (Harlandale ISD) who bested Martin Elementary (Northside ISD) in their final game. I invite you to witness the power of sport and enjoy photos from the tournament.
