Finding Fitness, Friends and Fun

Diana Castro is a testament to determination and fun as she starts her second year of San Antonio Sports Fit Family Challenge presented by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas. Hearing about the 12-week summer program through her daughter’s Girl Scout leader, Castro has been a steady participant and believer in the rewarding experience it provides. Fit Family Challenge is designed to get families active, eating better, and learning about health and fitness. Weekly Zumba® and Kid Fit classes are offered at eight locations, along with great prizes and cash incentives.

Castro says it wasn’t an immediate hit for her. “I love to dance, and it was getting to a point where I couldn’t even finish dancing to one song,” Castro explains. However, now she is truly committed, going to class four days a week and racking up all the points she can to qualify for the program prizes. Before Fit Family Challenge, Castro used to be out of breath when walking short distances and had to use a cane. But no more. Her blood pressure is under control, her cane is no longer needed, and she has lost 75 pounds! Along with the fun and fitness she has gained from participating, she adds the sisterhood she has found with other women who attend is what drives and encourages her.

“I have met so many wonderful people. They encourage me to stay on track. When you get into that positive environment, it really encourages you.” She occasionally brings her 12-year-old daughter to the free sessions, which gives them a time to bond over fitness.

Castro shares she doesn’t want anyone to feel like they cannot join this exciting and worthwhile program. “I think that everyone should give it a try. They don’t have to know all of the routines. Half the battle is just showing up. There are still a lot of routines that I don’t know.” She pushes everyone to experience Fit Family Challenge. She described how even when certain exercises are tough, she can always modify and keep pushing. “I have met the most uplifting people, and it is just a great program.”
