San Antonio Sports announced that Brennan High School’s Stephen Basore and Steele High School’s David Saenz, Jr. will serve as head coaches for the 2023 San Antonio Sports All-Star Football Game, presented by H-E-B. The game will showcase top local high school players following the All-American Bowl on Saturday, Jan. 7, 2023 in the Alamodome. Basore will coach Team Black and Saenz will coach Team Gold in the battle between the area’s top seniors.
The San Antonio Sports All-Star Football Game, presented by H-E-B, will feature players who are committed to play for some of the top universities in the country as well as players looking for an additional chance to impress college scouts with potential scholarships to offer. Fifty-one (51) who were in the 2022 All-Star Game have signed to play college football, including four committed to play for 2021 NCAA DIII National Champions, Mary Hardin-Baylor. Fourteen (14) are going to NCAA DI schools.
The two coaches, with a combined win-loss record of 157-47, will play against each other in the first game of the season when Brennan takes on Steel on August 27, and in their final game of the season as coaches of the all-star game.
Players from Bexar and seven surrounding counties are nominated by their high school coaches and chosen by a selection committee featuring broadcasters, journalists and former coaches. The 2023 All-Star Game rosters will be announced in the fall.
Stephen Basore has been athletic coordinator and head football coach at Northside ISD’s Brennan High School since it opened its doors in 2010. Brennan has since made the playoffs for 11 consecutive years and has won six district championships. Brennan has finished with a perfect regular season record of (10 – 0) four times and has won 10 games or more five times. Brennan also broke and currently holds the city record for most consecutive regular season wins, with a 34-game winning streak spanning from 2011 – 2015. Basore began his teaching and coaching career in the Northside Independent School District at Sam Rayburn Middle School in 1995 and was promoted to coach at John Jay High School. After spending ten years at John Jay, Basore followed John Jay head coach John Campbell to Katy Taylor High School and was promoted as the assistant head coach in 2007. The following year, Basore came back to San Antonio and NISD when Brandeis High School opened in 2008, serving as the defensive coordinator for two seasons.
David Saenz, Jr. has been part of the coaching staff at Steele High School in Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City ISD since 2007; was named co-defensive coordinator in 2012; and has been athletic coordinator and head football coach since 2017. He was co-defensive coordinator for the Steele team that went to the Class 6A DII final in 2016. Since becoming head coach, the Knights have a 45-17 record, going 11-1 in 2021-22, and 7-0 in district. His 21-year career includes coaching at Woodlake Hills Middle School and Kirby Junior High School in the Judson Independent School District.
