Challenge Accepted: Families Get Fit This Summer

The 9th annual San Antonio Sports Fit Family Challenge presented by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas begins May 14. Free Zumba and Kid Fit classes will be offered at eight locations, along with health screenings and incentives, including $25,000 in cash and prizes!

The 12-week program is open to all families in Bexar County. However, it targets neighborhoods that have the highest rates of diabetes and obesity. In an effort to eliminate barriers to participation, the weekly fitness classes take place at schools and churches in the target neighborhoods.

“I love the Fit Family Challenge because it is something we can do as a family that keeps us active during the summer,” says Lorraine Cantu, a mother of four who has attended regularly since 2015. “But it has evolved into something more than just Zumba. We have our own workout family that we now see outside of Zumba and have developed life-long friendships. With four healthy little ones, I need to stay on track with setting an example of a healthy lifestyle.”

More than 3,500 people have registered to run the Fit Family Challenge kickoff event, the D4 Heroes 5K/10K, a free, chip-timed race on Saturday, May 12.
