Getting It Done – A Message From Russ

We’re three quarters through our operating year, and I’m excited and positive about San Antonio Sports post-pandemic future. San Antonio Sports persevered through the most challenging time of its 37-year history and emerged stronger than ever.  I’m particularly grateful to our corporate partners, grantors, donors and staff who supported San Antonio Sports’ community impact as we continued to make a difference by providing free health and fitness programs. We’re wrapping up i play! at home, a virtual pivot from our in-person afterschool program, in which students had the opportunity to learn four sports and earn a piece of an i play! uniform (t-shirt, shorts, socks, shoes and backpack) for each sport unit they completed. We created high-end i play! at home instructional videos that were also used by PE teachers and schools throughout the area. i play! at home kids have completed more than 2,500 practices and our videos, which were also provided at no charge to area school districts to help with distance learning, have garnered almost 150,000 views and 555,000 impressions.

After going 100% remote last summer, the 2021 Fit Family Challenge presented by Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Texas is underway offering a hybrid of in-person and virtual classes. Health screenings and prizes are still part of the program and attendance has been strong. Seeing familiar faces, along with new ones, and hearing how this program provides an incentive to exercise and be healthy is rewarding. We project 4,300 engagements when the program ends in August with our Fit Family Challenge Finale free 5K

We also landed two major events that will boost our local economy–the 2022 Warrior Games and L’Étape San Antonio by Tour de France which will anchor our Fiesta FitFest next April 8-10. Next year promises to be busy, with the 2022 NCAA DI Men’s Basketball Regional and U.S. Master’s Swimming Spring Nationals returning to San Antonio.

In closing, I want to highlight the incredible job our team and community did in pulling off a successful NCAA Women’s DI Basketball Championship this past spring. In recognition of her leadership and passion, our Sr. Vice President and COO, Jenny Carnes, was recently named the 2020 San Antonio Express-News Sportswoman of the Year!

San Antonio Sports gets it done with great teammates and a passion for what we do. We are excited about the journey ahead!
