Micheal Phelps and USA Swimming returned to San Antonio in 2016 for the U.S. Olympic Team Training Camp in preparation for the Rio Olympics. Joining Phelps in the water in San Antonio were such stars as Katie Ledecky, Ryan Lochte, Missy Franklin and hometown hero Jimmy Feigen.
The U.S. Olympic Team made the most of their visit to San Antonio. They met with Coach Gregg Popovich, swam with Tony Parker and took a visit to the Alamo during their trip. Their week-long training camp was held at the Northside ISD Swim Center that had hosted the USA Swimming National Championships the year prior. San Antonians were given the opportunity to watch the team swim when they hosted an open practice at the swim center, to which 500 fans attended.
The waters of the Northside Swim Center treated Team USA well, as they blew the competition out of the pool in Rio. The team captured 33 medals, including 16 gold. This was 23 more medals than second place Australia. Team USA set four Olympic records and two world records, sending Phelps into retirement with a bang.
