2021 NCAA® WOMEN’S D1 BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP PROJECTED TO GENERATE ECONOMIC IMPACT OF $27.2 MILLION

Volunteers Need to Host

(SAN ANTONIO) A study projecting the economic impact of the 2021 NCAA® DI Women’s Basketball Championship, released by the San Antonio Local Organizing Committee (SALOC), estimates the local economy will receive a boost of $27.2 million as a result. More than 1,500 volunteers will be needed when San Antonio and the surrounding region host the tournament, with teams competing from March 21 through April 4.

SALOC has launched volunteer registration, requesting interested people sign up for three shifts at www.wffsanantonio.com. Volunteers are needed for a wide range of tasks, including liaisons at hotels and practice sites. They will receive a 2021 NCAA Final Four polo shirt, windbreaker, hat and mask and the experience of working on one of the top sporting events in the country. Volunteers must be 18 years old and are expected to pass a background check.

The economic study, prepared by Dr. Steven Nivin, chief economist of the SABÉR Research Institute, predicts an influx of 35,000 hotel room nights and more than 15,000 visitors, resulting in a rise in spending at local businesses such as restaurants, hotels, and retail stores.

Teams start arriving on March 16. The first round of the tournament will be held at five venues including the Alamodome, the University of Texas San Antonio, St. Mary’s University, the University of Texas – Austin, and Texas State University. Attendance will be limited to team players and guests, with each member of the 34-member official team travel party allowed up to six tickets for guests.

The Sweet Sixteen through the Women’s Final Four will take place at the Alamodome with a capacity of 17%. The decision to limit capacity while requiring masks and physical distancing was made in conjunction with local health authorities due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
