What’s in a Name?

San Antonio’s sports commission has had several names since 1984, but always the same mission. Initially the San Antonio Amateur Sports Foundation, the “amateur” was later dropped, and during the early 1990s the organization went by Team SA. Then in 2009, as the organization celebrated its 25th anniversary, the “foundation” was dropped from the name, making it San Antonio Sports. Yet the foundation – the basis for its existence – stayed the same. The focus remained on developing amateur sporting events in the city and surrounding region. With the name change also came a new logo: the white figure standing atop the “t” within a blue flame that can be seen today.

The organization’s goals were spelled out when the name change was announced, in newly defined mission and vision statements that emphasize what San Antonio Sports had been doing almost from the day it was born in the wake of the Los Angeles Olympics:

The San Antonio Sports mission: To transform our community through the power of sport.

The San Antonio Sports vision: To have healthy kids, places to play and events that impact.

Now, San Antonio Sports is celebrating its 40th anniversary. In the years since executive director Susan Blackwood, 25th anniversary chairman Joe Krier and incoming board chairman Bob Raymond unveiled the new name and logo, the organizational mission and vision have continued to position San Antonio at the forefront of the sporting world. In the future, this year’s anniversary might be viewed as a similar steppingstone in achieving the San Antonio Sports vision.
