Wayne Witwer has been volunteering for more than 20 years, primarily with sports-related organizations, including San Antonio Sports. This life-long athlete played basketball in college, continued playing in YMCA and church leagues into his 30’s, then took up tennis in his 30’s and enjoyed that until a knee injury sidelined him in his 50’s. “Golf is my passion now and I play at least once per week.”
It’s no surprise that Wayne’s favorite volunteer event is the Valero Texas Open because he loves to see the professional golfers up close.
Wayne often helps at San Antonio Sports events, serving as a team host for the UIL Basketball Championships, a shuttle driver during the NCAA Men’s Final Four, assisting with parking at the San Antonio Sports Corporate Cup, and other duties too numerous to list. One of his favorite assignments is being a team host at the UIL basketball tournament. “You get to interact with the coach and team and see the up-close action during the game. I have met some really great coaches at the UIL!”
Wayne is also a baseball fan. He has visited every Major League Baseball stadium, completing his tour last year. His first was in 1965 at Dodger Stadium and over the years he kept adding them one by one. Number 30 was an Atlanta Braves game at Sun Trust Park.
Wayne keeps busy. His other hobby is singing. “I am a 25-year member of the Barbershop Harmony Society and formerly sang with the San Antonio Chordsmen. For the past five years I have been singing with the San Antonio Friends In Harmony chorus and serve as treasurer.”
