Volunteer Spotlight: Roosevelt High School

Roosevelt High School students have volunteered for San Antonio Sports for several years. The school’s culture is one of helping the community, and student sponsors also believe it is a great way for them to learn about San Antonio while giving back. Some events where they’ve volunteered include the Rock ‘n’ Roll San Antonio Marathon, Big League Weekend and the Alpha Warrior Team Tough Fiesta Challenge.

“Every event offers different aspects and opportunities,” says Christina Wollard, head softball coach at Roosevelt. “The Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon allows for teamwork between athletic and National Honor Society students. Community service plays a huge role in the students’ lives in a positive manner. Big League Weekend allowed the football players who participated to interact with children in booths and to build a relationship with the community in the Roosevelt name. The Alpha Warrior Team Tough Challenge not only provided a volunteer opportunity, but it allowed the athletic leadership team to challenge themselves with strategy, critical thinking, teamwork, communication, and trust to get through the many obstacles presented. This is very similar to the challenges they face in their individual sports. While each opportunity is unique to each group, it helps create a campus united with the community and the city of San Antonio.”

Wollard says that she appreciates the stories of teamwork that develop between students and coordinators while volunteering. “There are many student-athletes and National Honor Society members who volunteer that get to know each other outside of school. It allows for relationships to build between organizations. “And it’s more than earning community service hours. Every year, they have recruited more and more students based on the experience alone.

“Roosevelt High School is looking forward to participating in future events. Being actively involved is a part of the campus vision so our students can be good citizens during and after their time in high school.”
