It has been clear over the years that the power of sport is inexplicably integral to San Antonio’s communities. The power of sport gives purpose for those who seek it, motivates kids and families to go further than they have before and creates opportunities for those who may have thought there were none.
During such unprecedented times as the pandemic, these truths became clearer than ever. As people were forced to distance themselves and uncertainty grew rampant, sport brought people together. Activities that people could do from home or in their neighborhoods boomed in popularity. For San Antonio Sports, it was important to be a part of that force bringing people together.
The omnipresent power of sport stops for no man, and no pandemic either.
That’s why, in 2020, a new initiative called “Stay Active. Stay Healthy.” was launched. The initiative shifted two signature programs to a virtual medium, with i play! afterschool at home and Fit Family Challenge Home Edition. In addition, the organization’s website was used to share free online fitness content.
While i play! was unable to continue its development of sports skills on young children in person, the at-home program provided videos for kids to keep practicing their skills under lockdown. Fit Family Challenge Home Edition offered multiple live Zumba classes each week, and a 12-week fitness challenge to keep people motivated to move.
As another part of the initiative, San Antonio Sports hosted sports legends such as Jackie Joyner-Kersee and Josh Davis on social media to help spread the message.
More than four years removed from the pandemic, San Antonio Sport is still transforming its community through the power of sport. The importance of doing so never wavered, even through a global pandemic, and San Antonio came out the other side stronger because of it.
