Lee H.S. Football Team Goes Beyond the Game

On February 19, a tornado swept through San Antonio pounding several neighborhoods and damaging houses in its path. Coach Danny Kloza from Lee High School and some of his football players loaded up a bus and ventured out to clean up and lend a helping hand after the storm.

The team volunteered “right at ground zero” around Highway 281 near the Quarry Market and the surrounding area, said Coach Kloza. Most of the football players who attended the cleanup are currently on the team, but Coach Kloza said a few former players came out as well. The boys did “anything and everything” to help rid the affected yards of tree limbs and other storm debris. If someone asked them to help with something, they did not hesitate. A few of the boys lived in the neighborhood, but none of their houses were badly affected. Coach Kloza said, “I’m not sure they did that much, however it was an eye opening experience for the players and gave them an opportunity to work as a team and realize the value of helping others.”

The team demonstrated all of the Beyond the Game key values which include respect, selfless service, integrity, caring, personal courage, and sportsmanship. Beyond the Game is a program of San Antonio Sports that recognizes middle and high school sports teams that have participated in community service off the playing field, implementing strong teamwork and mentorship.
