After a friend invited her to check out the San Antonio Sports Fit Family Challenge in July of 2017, Cecy Martinez was hooked. Attending Zumba® twice a week throughout the 12-week summer program and eating right was all it took for Cecy to begin seeing positive results not only physically, but emotionally.
San Antonio Sports Fit Family Challenge presented by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas is designed to encourage families to learn about health and fitness, eat right and stay active. The free weekly classes are offered at eight locations, along with great prizes and cash incentives.
Cecy rides the bus to every Fit Family Challenge class she attends and is often seen saving her spot in the second row, long before the rest of the class arrives.
To Cecy, Fit Family Challenge is more than a workout.
“I see it as my stress reliever. I don’t go because I need to lose weight. I go because it is a way to relieve stress. The fact that I lost all this weight was my bonus!”
Cecy has lost over 100 pounds in just a year!
Not only does she exercise regularly, Cecy has completely changed her eating habits. She explained that eating six small meals a day, staying away from meal-replacing shakes and never skipping a meal have made a tremendous impact on her progress.
The results of Cecy’s new lifestyle are astounding. In addition to the weight loss, her doctor recently took her off of her blood pressure medication! Big victories like these encourage Cecy to keep working hard.
Cecy describes herself as shy and quiet, but through Zumba, she is able to meet new friends and come out of her shell. Because of the Fit Family Challenge community, Cecy says there is always something to do, somewhere to go and people to meet. She even celebrated her birthday with her friends at a Fit Family Challenge class.
To those who are thinking about trying the Fit Family Challenge, Cecy suggests, “Don’t give up hope. Take baby steps. If I can do it, you can do it.”
