From Youth to Seniors–Providing Opportunities for All

The San Antonio Sports Foundation kept the ball rolling in 1995 with its next big multi-sport event, the U.S. National Senior Sports Classic, or the Senior Olympics. Moving to the other end of the age spectrum, the Senior Olympics brought together 8,000 of the nation’s athletes ages 50 and up. The Chattanooga Choo Choo’s, Green Mountain Old Timers and Jacksonville Super Moms, among many other teams, congregated in San Antonio for a week of competition and celebration.

From May 17-24, athletes competed in 18 sports, including golf, horseshoes and volleyball. As was becoming customary for San Antonio sporting events, thousands answered the call to volunteer, undoubtedly a product of the U.S. Olympic Festival- ‘93’s legacy. In total, the event contributed $4.8 million in economic impact to the San Antonio community.

With yet another great multi-sport event under its belt, the Sports Foundation was ready to keep their successes flowing and pursue bigger and better events. And they did, landing multiple NCAA men’s regionals and a Women’s Final Four. The big, real-time focus though, was San Antonio’s upcoming hosting of the 1998 Men’s Final Four, the first of many for the Alamo City.
