Since taking over the All-Star Football Game in 2013, San Antonio Sports heard from athletic directors about the impact the game has on their student-athletes, families and community. Many asked when would we expand to other sports?
In 2024, San Antonio Sports launched a new event to showcase San Antonio’s elite high school basketball talent: the San Antonio Sports All-Star Basketball Game. It also provided an opportunity to showcase top area female athletes.
Game day saw 120 top local high school seniors in a competition of Team Black vs Team Gold in two divisions: 1A-4A plus private schools and 5A-6A. Both divisions had a boys and girls game. Between the two divisions’ games, a skills challenge and three point contest were also played.
The trophies for each game were named after four notable local coaches: Rudy Bernal, San Antonio Sports Hall of Famer Stan Bonewitz, Triva Corrales and Christina Camacho. The games were marked by high flying action and something you don’t see too often in all-star basketball games: defense.
San Antonio has long been known for its love of basketball. With the hometown Spurs and the hosting of the UIL State Tournament since 2015, basketball has always been a staple of the city. With Division I commits like Brandeis’ Rian Forestier, headed to the University of Southern California, San Antonio’s basketball strength is clear, but can sometimes be overlooked. The San Antonio Sports All-Star Basketball Game now gives emerging high school talent the stage to show why the city is a haven for hoops dreams.
