In 2021, due to COVID-19, the entirety of the NCAA DI Women’s Basketball Tournament was played in San Antonio. Games were played at sites in and surrounding the city, including the Alamodome, Frank Erwin Center and Bill Greehey Arena. Instead of the usual East, West, South and Midwest regions, the first rounds were aptly named the Alamo, HemisFair, Mercado and River Walk Regionals.
The Final Four, held at the Alamodome, was comprised of Stanford, South Carolina, UConn, and Arizona. In the semifinals, Stanford squeaked by South Carolina, winning 66-65, while Arizona overcame UConn 69-59. In the national championship game, Stanford won their second straight one-point game, beating Arizona 54-53.
The 2021 tournament was likely the only that will ever be hosted by just one city. It was the third time San Antonio had hosted the Women’s Final Four. San Antonio Sports’ long repertoire of hosting NCAA basketball championships has landed the city another Women’s Final Four since, as the event will return to the Alamodome in 2029. The Men’s Final Four in San Antonio will come first, being played in 2025.
