Volunteer Spotlight: Brandon Brewer

Brandon Brewer was a student at UTSA when he learned about volunteer opportunities with San Antonio Sports at an on-campus event recruiting volunteers for the 2018 NCAA Men’s Final Four.  “I stopped by between my classes to sign up for a few shifts, not really knowing what exactly I was signing up for,” he remembers. But as luck would have it, he was “very pleased” and regrets not signing up for more shifts.

Brandon has since volunteered for the Rock ‘n’ Roll San Antonio Marathon, UIL State Basketball Championships, San Antonio Sports All-Star Football Game and most recently, the NCAA Women’s DI Basketball Championship. But the 2018 Men’s Final remains his favorite event. “It was an amazing experience working with the street team and helping people find whatever they were looking for.  Everything about that weekend gave me memories to last a lifetime, and also holds special meaning because it was my first time volunteering.”

His most memorable experience volunteering was ushering at the national team soccer match between Argentina and Mexico. “When the Mexican national anthem was played before the game, the entire stadium sang along, and it gave me chills” he recounts. “It was my first time witnessing in person the incredible amount of passion soccer fans have for both their team and their country.”

Brandon continues volunteering for San Antonio Sports because he enjoys the experience of helping out in the community and “playing a role in some of the city’s most momentous and memorable events.  I have also met many people throughout my volunteer shifts and have enjoyed learning about them, what they do, and why they volunteer as well.”

And that street team gig that started it all? It proved to be a valuable experience in more ways than one. Brandon graduated from UTSA in 2019 and is currently working as a street team ambassador for Spurs Sports & Entertainment.
