San Antonio Sports’ “Power of Sport” campaign has brought together top business leaders and athletes across the city to raise awareness about the impact sports can have on youth and future career success. The focus of the “Power of Sport” campaign is i play! afterschool. This program provides third through fifth-grade students in Title 1 school districts the opportunity to participate in sports and learn life-changing lessons such as discipline, teamwork and communication.
During the 2019-2020 school year, 58 schools (expanding from 48) and 1,450 students in San Antonio ISD, Harlandale ISD, Northside ISD and North East ISD will participate in the i play! afterschool program.
Students participating in i play! afterschool learn five different sports over the course of the school year; soccer, track, volleyball, basketball and tennis. In addition to fundamental sports skills, students also learn about nutrition and character. As seen in the graph above, students who participate in i play! afterschool have a lower percentage rate of chronic absenteeism and behavior incidents than their peers who do not participate. Students are the future of our community and we are honored to provide a program that helps prepare them for a bright future!
In order to ensure this incredible program remains available for future students to enjoy, our “Power of Sport” campaign raises funds and awareness to support these initiatives. From individuals to business donors, these contributions are changing students’ lives and shaping our city for a brighter future.
