(March 31, 2021) The U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command has named San Antonio as host city for the 2022 Department of Defense Warrior Games, Mayor Ron Nirenberg announced today. “On behalf of the citizens of our great city, I am both proud and excited to announce that San Antonio — Military City USA — has been chosen as the host for the 2022 Department of Defense Warrior Games,” said Mayor Nirenberg, who along City’s Office of Military Affairs and San Antonio Sports, has been working with Pentagon officials to bring the event to San Antonio.
San Antonio Sports, the nonprofit organization that serves as the city’s sports commission, will coordinate sport and venue management of the games, including staffing and volunteers.
“We’re happy to partner with the United States Veterans Chamber of Commerce, Pro Football Hall of Fame and City of San Antonio in executing the best Department of Defense Warrior Games in history,” said Russ Bookbinder, president & CEO of San Antonio Sports. “We missed the opportunity to host in 2020 because of COVID-19 and are excited to stage this event and recognize our wounded, ill or injured service members.”
First held in 2010, the Warrior Games brings together more than 300 wounded, ill or injured athletes, including many from international allied nations. The active duty and veteran service members — representing the Air Force, Army, Marine Corps, Navy and Special Operations Command — will compete in wheelchair basketball, cycling, swimming, powerlifting, wheelchair rugby and other adaptive events. The Games aid the athletes’ recovery process and facilitate a sense of camaraderie and community.
The Pro Football Hall of Fame will host the 2023 Games. United States Veterans Chamber of Commerce (USVCC) is the organizer and co-host for both events.
The 2021 DoD Warrior Games will be hosted by the U.S. Army at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando in September.
