It’s no easy task selecting players for the San Antonio Sports All-Star Football Game presented by H-E-B, especially this year when our selection committee met virtually. And like the high school football season, selection was delayed by several weeks. But a group of experts representing former athletic directors, former coaches and media who cover high school football picked the best from around the area. 112 area seniors from 62 schools were selected. Usually we play our game after the All-American Bowl in the Alamodome. But after the national showcase game was cancelled due to COVID-19, we moved our game to Jan. 30 after all divisions of high school football have finished. We also moved locations and will play the game at Heroes Stadium. What hasn’t changed is the game will feature players who are committed to some of the top universities in the country, as well as those looking for an additional chance to impress college scouts.
Reagan High School’s Lyndon Hamilton will coach the Black, and David Branscom, from Brandeis High School, will coach the Gold. Players were nominated by their high school coaches, and 79 were named to All-District teams last year. Fifty-six (56) seniors who were in last year’s All-Star Game went on to play college football.
In addition to physical skills, players who are All-Stars reflect perseverance, character and inner-strength. This year San Antonio Sports wants to shine a light on the impact that one player can have on a community. Former Judson Rocket, Bryce Wisdom, is a true All-Star and his life deserves special recognition. He passed away in July from cancer and is named as an honorary member of 2021 All-Star Team.
I hope you will join us in celebrating this special group of players on Jan. 30, either in-person or by watching the game broadcast on the CW 35 or listening on ESPN 1250 radio. Stay tuned for details as we get closer to the game.
