Mother Nature has taught us so much the last few months starting with, “hold my beer!” For years, it’s been a running joke in our office that I’m in charge of the weather for our events, and I’ve had a good run — until recently.
As the daughter of a farmer still harvesting some of the produce you regularly eat and buy at H-E-B, I usually welcome rain until harvest season. But what our team has endured and overcome the last several months has been incredible and indescribable. It reminds me of how an eighth-seeded team in the NBA playoffs emerges with greatness to defy the odds.
Our small staff of fewer than 20 people is always on call and wakes up to weather alerts at 1:00 a.m. when we know there will be an issue and adjustments needed before participants arrive to start their day. At Fiesta FitFest, Team Tough Challenge and again at Corporate Cup, we have been there cleaning up broken tents and resetting venues in the wee hours of the morning.
I would put our team up against Butler and Jokic any day because we know our mission is to survive and advance, from successful event to event and program to program, while we continue to do all that we do for our community.
Stay tuned for our summer “tent-raiser” after losing almost 100 canopies in 11 months!
Game on!
