Sports often sets people on a path on which they would never have ventured. The same goes for meeting new people; sometimes all it takes is one person who recognizes your potential and changes your life. We have the honor of sharing Rad Weaver’s inspiring story and how his passion for sports, and Red McCombs’ mentorship, paved the way for his success as CEO of McCombs Partners.

As the son of a high school football coach, Rad’s passion for sports began at an early age, and he excelled in sports and academics throughout his years in school. As a senior applying for scholarships, Rad submitted a letter to the “Ford Salute to Education” program which caught the eye of Red McCombs Automotive Group founder, B.J. “Red” McCombs. This led to the beginning of a lifelong mentorship and business relationship. Rad accepted an offer to join the University of Texas at Austin baseball team and he graduated with a degree in business.

Rad shared how sports provided valuable skills he uses as a business leader. “Sports taught me that anything is possible. If you put the work in, you will see the results.” Rad discussed that just like in sports, every decision you make in the workforce has an outcome. As a leader and team member, it is up to you to recognize how your actions will affect others and when you need to step in to either help your team or complete a task on your own. “There are times you have to do things yourself, and there are times you inspire others to do things for you.”
With his support, we are proud to raise awareness and funds so that we can help other students participate in youth sports and learn these incredible life lessons. Just as Rad had influential people in his life who helped him grow as an athlete and businessman, i play! afterschool was created to make an impact on students’ lives and help them grow. As Rad stated, “Sports is the great equalizer.” Sports is for everyone, and everyone has room for improvement. Whether an athlete is trying a new sport for the first time or has been playing for years, all team members work together and learn from each other and the game.
Current executives and leaders like Rad Weaver, are sharing their experiences through San Antonio Sports’ “Power of Sport” campaign in an effort to educate the public about the positive effects of youth sports and how i play! afterschool is changing lives.
